birthday! yes!

I spent yesterday afternoon crafting and baking. The above package, and the apple pie that I forgot to take a picture of (which read "Happy 26 Ryan!" in apple slices) were delivered and well received last night.

Earlier in the evening, I went to see Devendra Banhart at the Belly Up with my friend Susie -- it was so much fun experiencing our first 21+ venue together. (Bars with stages don't count). The opening band Giant Drag sounded like a whole band with just two people -- a girl who looked troublingly thin and fourteen (she claimed to be 24) and a boy who double tasked as drummer and keystroker on the keyboard -- chock full of pre-recorded basslines and scales. It was sort of amazing after awhile.

Devendra Banhart and his band -- seriously does everyone have to look like a cross between an anorexic Charles Manson and Jesus? There were a lot of bells and whistles in his LIVE AND ELECTRIC(!) show, which I thought made for good entertainment but was not the reason why I like his music.

Of course the highlight of my night was being able to hang out with Susie more and find a kindred spirit in her. I love my friends.

I was terrible and had to cut the night short though so we left before the final set and got vegetarian Mexican food and ate at my house while sharing stories of roommate woes of years past, and then I went over to Ryan's apartment to start the celebration of the beginning of his 26th year. I arrived on his doorstep exactly a few minutes after midnight.

Now I have to go get my bleeding eye checked. Have a lovely day!

I am so sad. My cell phone has gone missing. & my eye is bleeding.

So I will be pretty out of reach unless you are my mom, my roommate, or my boyfriend.

FRIENDS: please email me your numbers again.

Everything in Transit project

I've been shooting a lot lately, but I haven't been uploading/editing for the web as quickly as I'm clicking away. Instead, I've been processing them for print quality for my senior portfolio. Later on, I intend on processing JPEG files so that I can put up a (somewhat) comprehensive photography gallery on here. For now, you can see some of the proofs on my flickr, by following the link to your right.

Thanks and love to sweet little Miss Alice for being my living doll.

I predict that for most of this week, I will be living in the darkroom, in a flurry of proofs.

This past weekend, I spent a great deal of downtime at work reading a lot of really great, inspiring(understatement!) blogs: Little Birds, A Bird in the Hand, Little Rosy Things, and Vegan Lunch Box. The last one is absolutely incredible, inventive, and inspiring (so much so that it's causing me to spill alliteration like it ain't no thang). It led me to Why Vegan?, a straight-forward well of information on the farm animal industry.

In the past four years, I've quickly weeded out the amount of meat I eat to almost none -- mostly thanks to a college student diet and being able to choose/make what I want to eat because it's for myself. This site has secured me a one way ticket to Vegetarianland (it's far too intense for me to attempt Veganism with my terrible affection for shoes). Animal cruelty and women's rights; they really get my goat (pun fully intended).

I've become really obsessed with learning to cook lately, and committing recipes to memory. Tomorrow night there will be a dinner party at my apartment with two good girlfriends; I'm excited to try out some new things. Nothing like good food, good wine, and good friends.

Welcome, Spring!

Welcome, Spring!
Originally uploaded by Love & Tea.
One: Extravagant weekend in the Gaslamp, where I learned the true extent of my power as a HYT (hot young thing). I can't help but feel a little guilty wielding the power of youth in exchange for free drinks and VIP entrance to new clubs. But then again, it's the power of numbers that really prevails; going with a bunch of hot girlfriends is the key. Dancefloors in downtown, by the way, are very similar to watching mating rituals on the African plains. As fun as it is to get all access just for being pretty and 21, the single scene out there is rough. But hey, I just want to dance.

Two: Need to pick up two rolls of 120 film.

Three: Will be taking more pictures; though I am a week late, I will still be taking up Kerstin's color challenge.

Four: Barely any class this week! Yes!

Five: Yay spring weather! Yay yay yay!

Six: The boy gets back from Australia on Thursday morning.

Seven: Starting that job hunt...

Eight: Finally finishing Gina's good girl package.

Hello.

Here's your life.
What're you going to do with it?

It's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Archives may be making a comeback -- at least the last two years. There are also plans to make the site more photography portfolio based and less blog-based, though the blog will still be around. I just don't think it's generating much interest anymore, but if you like it tell your friends. I'd like this to be a forum, a dialogue, a space for people to inspire, be inspired, and be moved in little ways in their lives.

That said, I will attempt to learn more about my digital Rebel XT this quarter alongside learning to use large and medium format cameras (kill me, please). Just kidding. It's terribly exciting. Just dreadful to share 4 cameras of each with 22 peers.

P.S. I reread To Kill A Mockingbird while on my cruise, which I hadn't read in 9 years, and it was absolutely amazing. One of my favorite books ever.

We docked in San Pedro early this morning, and four hours later we were hitting the Los Angeles freeways once again. The ground still sways a bit when I walk, but I think it's just the liquid in my eyes sloshing around.

I spent a week eating copiously, reading, and sitting. Passive stimulation. Mexico was beautifully warm, a wretched juxtaposition of the haves & have-nots. The border riots have not yet affected the tourist-economy-driven ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.

I'm waiting at my parents' house for two more loads of laundry to be done, then I'm on a train headed back down to catch up on a week of school and make plans to see all the friends and places that will make up the last 9 weeks of my undergraduate career.

Last Saturday, Ryan and I drove my dog back up to my parents', and then we spent the day in LA. We dropped too much time & money at Amoeba, ate at my favorite falafel place on Fairfax, I introduced him to Diddy Riese, he became paparazzi (paparazzo, singular?) to the ordinary people as he shot from the hip and out my car window for his photography class. I saw the cutest pug puppy in the WORLD at Third Street Promenade, being walked around by a guy who looked like a member of Three 6 Mafia, which made it about 300 times more endearing. WTF MEN WITH DESIGNER DOGS!

Saturday, April 01, 2006

Apologies for being so absent lately; spring break was barely a break. I spent most of the week preparing for my students' gallery walk date and my Teach for America interview, both of which went without hitch. In between fourth graders and paperwork, I also hung out with my dog, got a haircut, and barely slept.

I will be gone next week, spending my time reading and eating along the Mexican Riviera.

While I'm gone, I want you guys to answer: what do you want most in this world?
