There's blood in my mouth cause I've been biting my tongue all week.

I didn't get a chance to mention that a few nights ago I saw this foxy lady and her fellow foxy men play live in Santa Monica. Can I just tell you how much I love Jenny Lewis and want to be her when I grow up? One of the most surreal things about LA is that the famous are down at your neighborhood grocery store or Target, and Jenny Lewis is no different in that she still lives in her rent-controlled one bedroom apartment in Silverlake. I mean, I'd totally spend all my money on hoards of fancy clothes than on rent, too.

All the superficial aside, Rilo Kiley was pretty amazing too. I've felt pretty disconnected with music the past few years, and I don't know if part of it is growing up or that I just haven't had time to connect with all the new young things. Growing up, music for me (and I suspect a lot of other people) was a way of connecting with the world and existing vicariously in scenes that were outside the limits of my southern California suburban upbringing. A lyric inspired novels, literally.

And now, when most of my favorite bands and musicians have faded into the backdrop that is one's deep expansive life, Rilo Kiley's music is still vivid and relevant. Songs that have been soundtracks to relationships and breakups still translate to new situations and new relationships, like an old friend who listens to your 2 am babble about it all. At first I wasn't that fond of Under the Blacklight, but I've actually grown to like it quite a bit for so specifically targeting that Los Angeles underbelly feel.

I didn't intend this to be such a music nostalgia heavy post -- I just wanted to say that I totally love that Jenny rocked glittery gold tights, and I want some. I love that tights are back in & hence everywhere and plentiful in style!

I never felt so wicked as when I willed our love to die

Though Rilo Kiley's new album is no More Adventurous, there are still certain signature songs on Under the Blacklight that spark lines and lines of prose in my mind. I've been so inspired to get into my novel again (which has been "resting" since pretty much last summer), and now that I have a writing corner set up in the new apartment and no access to the internet at home for another two weeks, I hope I'll be able to jump on this inspiration wagon.

There are so many exciting creative projects in my line-up for the fall to look forward to, including collaborations with talented friends. Moving out of my first apartment by myself had been much more emotionally exhausting than I had anticipated, as it was a hallmark of all the things I had accomplished for myself as a "grown-up". I still remember being wistful when friends went back to school last fall; but this fall, I'm actually quite excited for the life I'm living and all the plans I get to make.

Lying On The Floor Music

Rainy Day Couple

I'll Be Your Umbrella

I don't think I ever posted the finished version of my first acrylic painting that I mentioned briefly earlier this month. The girl turned out real nicely, but the boy looks a little tweaked out. As it turns out, acrylics don't really blend as well (if at all) as oils do. But they appeal to my impatient sense, and I can quickly finish a painting within a day or two, whereas the oil painting I started at the same time is still awaiting the drying of the under-painting.

You might also notice that the soundtrack for July is updated, finally. I'm always between great dance floor at a dive bar music and Saturday night songs you listen to lying on the floor of your apartment. I love both so so much. And I am SO excited for Rilo Kiley's new album, Under The Blacklight dropping on August 21.
