Scorpio Sun, Aries Moon, Virgo Rising

With all that's been going on lately in this crazy world, I've been withdrawing and spending more time reading up on my astrology. I know it seems totally silly in times like these, but what else have we got to hold onto with a ridiculous election ahead of us and "worse than the Great Depression" headlines everywhere? It's like the MGM musicals of the 1930s - I want some damn escapism!

I recently learned about the Rising Sun sign and the Moon sign - these in combination with your sun sign (the one you probably already know, since it's by your birthday), help further explain who you are and why you do or react the way you do. Your Rising Sun sign is how people perceive you, and your Moon sign is how you really are on the inside (and I suspect a bit of how you perceive yourself?) Your sun sign, of course, shapes most of your personality. It's all very complex, but that's my basic understanding of it. I was very interested to find that I was perceived as a Virgo (shy, neat, orderly), but was an Aries on the inside (high-spirited, courageous, impulsive). Of course, I'm just a true Scorpio through and through. What's funny is that I took an informal survey through the office and with some of my friends, and found some things I never thought as perceptions of myself - that I'm reserved at first (because I'm not the least bit shy), and that I'm secretive! How secretive can a girl with a public blog be?

Anyway, to figure out your own birth chart/Rising Sun/Moon/Sun sign meanings, I found the free chart at Astrolabe to be the simplest and most direct.

And a few more places for you to check out if you're a total astrology fun-loving geek like me:
- astrologyzone.com: some equally astrology-loving coworkers turned me onto Susan Miller's monthly forecast; that woman is good.
- Chronogram: another coworker turned me onto this; I'm not sure he's exactly dead-on for me (he's super cryptic sometimes!) but she says he's always solid for her (she's an Aquarius). So take your chances.

Mercury is in retrograde right now, which means that if you find yourself constantly frustrated with technical and communication breakdowns, the universe is the culprit. Which explains why my computer broke (but is now being repaired for free at the Apple store, despite it being many years out of warranty) and the brake light just went on in my car after I just had it serviced two weeks ago! Call it superstition, but it's still a lot better than the Great Depression.

Happy October, friends!

The Beginning of the End

So as of today, my fall begins. I have free time once again after work to whittle away as I please, and I'll probably spend most of it reading/knitting/watching the new fall television line-up. Mostly because my laptop broke yesterday, and I'm finally resigning myself to buying a new one (yay gorgeous new macbook here I come!). Which means I should be buying less.

Here's a list so I'll be more productive:

- finish knitting scarf
- read a lot, including but not limited to:
- The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles
- Lolita
- Ms. Hempel Chronicles
- Housekeeping
- Jane Eyre
- The God of Small Things
- Naked

- write fiction, 30 minutes daily
- join the gym, go four times a week
- start going to yoga weekly again
- sewing new clothes/fixing old clothes

L.A. Flower District

This morning Ryan & I went downtown to visit the Flower District. In another life, I would totally love to be a flower arranger or wedding planner. But as a flower arranger, I'd probably get all anal and crazy a la Ruth on Six Feet Under. I really went down in seek of flower boxes to make into little homes for my dolls, but they were far too narrow. So I'll be brainstorming another way to present them all weekend.

Also, we got a new computer so I'm delighting in the speed & color accuracy.

PSA: Why this Election Matters.

This election is too important, and has too much at stake, to not check your facts. I'm not going to say much more because there are many people, much more eloquent than myself, who have spoken on all the topics ranging from Choice to taxes. Just make sure you're taking the time to read it for yourself, and see what the bottom line really is. I'm very much looking forward to tonight's Presidential Debate -- I'll be hanging onto every word, and I hope you are too.

Wii!!

Ryan brought home a new Wii last night. He found the last lonely one sitting on the store shelves, looking at him with its big, bright watery eyes and he couldn't resist it. "You never see one in the store," he reasoned to me when he revealed its shiny white hardware last night. "I said to myself, if it's still here after I get back from the DVD section, then I'm taking it!"

And that is how we welcomed home our new little Wii, aptly named Danger. What's with all the electronic objects being named nowadays? Are they taking the place of little training pets, i.e. goldfish & hamsters, in modern childhood? We haven't any games yet, so we spent a good portion of last night (til 2am!) playing Wii boxing & bowling & golf. I can't wait to get a second controller and Mario Party (!!!) this weekend, so that I can convince friends to make the trek up again. Whee!!

A nice, hot cup of strong tea.

For the writers, and readers, and bibliophiles, and anyone who enjoys cleverly made hypertext: I Made Tea. Sometimes I wish my own writing would unravel as easily with a click of a mouse.

Lately I've been filled with a lot of anxiety about wanting to be an illustrator and a writer; I know that at the root of every successful artist & writer is hard work. I'm worried that I won't have enough time to work hard enough to be successful at either if I keep splitting myself this way. But I don't know any other way to be.

Fall Blitz

Yesterday was such a media blitz in my little corner of the world. All the books I ordered last week came in the mail, along with the little extra I threw in for myself (the Sex and the City movie). I thoroughly enjoyed the 12 extra minutes - mostly spent with all the girls modeling Carrie's tacktastic '80s wardrobe. When I got home, three new magazines were waiting for me in the mail: Nylon, Martha Stewart Living & Domino. Zooey Deschanel is on the cover of Nylon, which made my day. I love Fall! So many good, new things to look forward to!

So today, I've gotta go for a run after work to make up for planting my ass on the couch for four hours straight, between watching SATC & the three hour long Heroes extravaganza last night. Run & draw: those are my orders for the day.

Welcome to the Dollhouse

As I promised yesterday, here's my newest doll! Her name is Lula, and she's best friends with Betsey, whom you got to meet last week. I'm scouting out a boxed home for the two of them so that they can be safely delivered to wherever they need to go. I might try out the downtown L.A. Flower District next weekend, if I can wait that long. Thank you for all your wonderful encouragement when I shared Betsey last week; I hope you'll warm up to Lula the same.

Happy Monday, friends.

The Conjoined Twins

And my fifth & final piece in the Circus Girls series, Marla & Darla, The Twins. Sorry for the delay - I had to take a new photo while there was good daylight in my dark little apartment! Stay tuned for a new doll I can't wait to share...

In other news, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Ryan & I took an impromptu trip down to my parents' house over the weekend since they got a new puppy! Who can resist a new puppy? I'm spearheading the campaign to name her Penny, what with her coppery color and tiny 3 pound frame. We also went to Disneyland later in the day, and did a little drawing. (And ride-going & food-eating, of course). Today, I mostly ran errands, did laundry, uploaded photos, and worked on some essays. I'm polishing off my night with some Mad Men; hooray for its Emmy for Best Drama Series!

Book Crazy

So last month I tried cutting down on buying frivolous, lovely things like books, clothes, etc. It was totally not worth it, as my credit card bill came down to the same as it always is. I swear it's some sort of black hole; I think I might have a little into how we can all end up like Ed McMahon. Even the guy at my local Anthropologie said, "Long time, no see!" while I was plucking up a new dress after my big eff you to saving.

Now, I'm cutting down on buying lunch at work & planning grocery shopping more wisely instead -- and treating myself to whatever frivolities I want (within reason) since, as the bf kindly reminded me, I've got to while I'm still on a payroll! (I know, I should be responsible and save, I'm trying!)

I went on a big book coveting spree over the weekend since it will all be very useful resource material soon, hopefully! Here's what I got:
